Chinmayi Counters Chiranjeevi’s Remarks on Casting Couch

By TeluguFunda / January 27, 2026

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s recent comments on the casting couch issue have sparked a heated discussion within the film industry. His statement that the casting couch “does not exist if women remain strict and professional” received mixed reactions, with several voices questioning the simplicity of such a claim in the context of a complex and sensitive issue.

Responding strongly, singer and dubbing artist Chinmayi, who has been outspoken about the casting couch for years, disagreed with Chiranjeevi’s remarks. She asserted that the casting couch is a harsh reality in the film industry and not an exaggerated or imaginary problem. According to her, the issue has existed for decades and has only intensified over time.

Chinmayi acknowledged that senior artistes from Chiranjeevi’s era may have maintained respectful and dignified conduct toward women. However, she emphasized that the current industry environment is vastly different. She pointed out that power imbalances have made the casting couch a widespread and dangerous practice, particularly affecting newcomers and women who lack strong backing.

She also questioned why some senior women in the industry have criticized the Me Too movement, calling it troubling that women themselves sometimes discourage others from speaking out. Chinmayi noted that certain industry terminologies often carry hidden implications and that women are frequently pressured under the pretext of professional commitment.

Highlighting disturbing incidents she is aware of, Chinmayi revealed that there have been cases where women had to lock themselves inside rooms to escape sexual assault attempts. She also spoke about instances where male artistes allegedly behaved inappropriately, sent explicit messages, and demanded sexual favors in exchange for career opportunities.

Referring to her own experience, Chinmayi reiterated that she was harassed by a senior music composer even in the presence of her mother. She clarified that the incident was non-consensual and that she had always regarded him with respect, viewing him as a mentor.

According to Chinmayi, a deeply entrenched mindset still exists among some men in the industry — the belief that offering professional opportunities to women entitles them to sexual access. She described this attitude as dangerous and one that urgently needs to be challenged.
