A surprising and confused screenplay of Atul Sabharwal’s espionage thriller Berlin, now streaming on Zee5, leaves you wondering more questions than the answers.
Berlin is a slow-burning espionage thriller about the mysterious unofficial feud between Wing and Bureau. They both belong to the Government of India, yet there is an unsaid feud among them that places the nation below personal importance in the disguise of detouring the attack on Indian President by ISI (Pakistani Intelligence Service). So, therefore the framing of deaf-and-dumb Ashok Kumar (Ishwak Singh) to protect Jagdish Sondhi (Rahul Bose).
Berlin is also a cafe of information trading by top bureaucrats. The concept of dumb and deaf people acting as a wall between the tables in cafe is just magnificent. We know why the character Ashok Kumar was made deaf and dumb in the story. We get to know why Pushkin Varma (Aparshakti Khurana) was brought into the investigation. We feel the darkness of Berlin cafe and its world by this single framework of thought. It is simply astounding.
Everything about Berlin is odd, not in a bad way. It looks special. The frames captured by cinematographer Shree Namjoshi and production designed by Ashok Lokare and Sandeep Shelar looks and feels like everything of the 1990s world. The cinematography of Namjoshi perfectly blends in the cool colour temperatures suiting the Russian temperatures of cold war and Delhi’s cold winters.
However, there is very little to talk about Berlin without spilling the spoilers. Berlin is that disturbing film that might want you to take a piece of paper to establish the motives of characters in this nonlinear confusing screenplay.
