Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has once again sparked an important debate about the direction of Indian cinema. Speaking at the pre-release event of Singeetam, the actor expressed concern over how filmmaking has increasingly become a business-driven exercise rather than a creative pursuit. According to Kamal, the industry’s growing obsession with massive budgets and box-office numbers is gradually pushing storytelling and originality into the background.

Drawing attention to the changing priorities of filmmakers, Kamal remarked that spending hundreds of crores does not automatically make a film great. He cited the classic Pushpaka Vimana as an example, noting that the film was made on a modest budget of around ₹15 lakh but delivered timeless entertainment and creative brilliance that continues to be celebrated even today. His comments have resonated strongly at a time when the industry is heavily focused on pan-India spectacles and record-breaking collections.

The actor’s observations reflect a reality visible across Indian cinema. Inspired by the success of several large-scale blockbusters, many filmmakers and stars are now prioritizing grand world-building, high-end visual effects, and massive action sequences. Even actors with limited market reach are increasingly seeking larger-than-life projects. As a result, the number of content-driven, mid-budget films has declined significantly. At the same time, several expensive productions have struggled to recover their investments, raising concerns about the sustainability of the current trend.

Kamal’s remarks carry additional weight because of his reputation as a visionary. Years ago, during the release of Vishwaroopam, he proposed making films available through Direct-to-Home platforms alongside theatrical releases. The idea was met with resistance and criticism at the time. However, the post-pandemic OTT boom eventually validated his forward-thinking approach, proving that he had anticipated a major shift in audience viewing habits long before the industry embraced it.

For that reason, many believe his latest comments should not be dismissed as mere criticism. Instead, they serve as a warning and a reminder that cinema must not lose its artistic soul amid the race for bigger budgets and higher collections. Kamal emphasized that memorable films are born from powerful ideas and compelling storytelling rather than financial scale alone.

The actor also praised legendary filmmaker Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, who continues to inspire audiences and filmmakers alike even at the age of 94. Through his tribute, Kamal subtly reinforced his central message: great cinema is created by imagination, vision, and creativity not by the size of its budget.
