The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating as flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed just minutes after it took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 1:38 PM.

The plane went down in Meghani Nagar, a densely populated residential area. Terrifying visuals from the site show wreckage scattered across buildings, with parts of the aircraft smashing into a student hostel at BJ Medical College.

Shocking video footage has revealed one of the most disturbing elements of the crash. A verified video shows the Air India plane descending rapidly just moments before it crashed. BBC Verify confirmed the location in the video by matching it with the actual crash site near the airport. Eyewitnesses captured the chaos, showing thick smoke rising as a large crowd rushed toward the crash site.

The video also shows a wheel from the aircraft lodged on the rooftop of the hostel building. The debris hit a building that houses intern doctors, creating panic and fear among residents.

Details of Passengers on Board

The flight carried 242 people, including passengers and crew members. Among them, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British nationals, 7 were Portuguese, and 1 was Canadian. Air India confirmed that ambulances are taking the injured to nearby hospitals. The airline also launched a dedicated helpline (1800 5691 444) to help families with updates.

Government Responds Swiftly

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu has taken direct control of the situation. He ordered all aviation and emergency agencies to respond swiftly and work in coordination. Naidu expressed deep shock and confirmed that he already deployed rescue teams and arranged immediate medical aid at the crash site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the minister to review the situation. He urged the minister to ensure full support for rescue operations. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for quick delivery of medical and logistical support.

UK Embassy Statement

Because the flight had 53 British citizens, the UK Embassy in India issued an official statement. They said they are already coordinating with Indian authorities to gather facts and offer support to affected citizens.
