Storyline

Michael (2026) traces the early journey of Michael Jackson, focusing on the years between 1966 and 1988. The film begins with Joseph Jackson forming The Jackson 5 and rigorously training his sons to achieve musical success.

As the group rises to fame under Motown, young Michael emerges as the standout performer. However, tension builds as Michael aspires to break free from the family band and pursue a solo career, while his father remains controlling and determined to keep him within the group.

The narrative revolves around this father-son conflict, offering glimpses of Michael’s rise, personal struggles, and emotional isolation.

Positives

Jaafar Jackson delivers an impressive debut, capturing Michael’s aura, dance style, and mannerisms convincingly.
Strong performances by Nia Long and Juliano Krue add emotional weight.
Some beautifully written and impactful dialogues elevate key moments.
Emotional sequences, especially those highlighting Michael’s loneliness and bond with animals, are well-executed.
Powerful depiction of racism, including the struggle to get airtime on MTV.
Music, dance numbers, and IMAX presentation are visually and sonically appealing.

Negatives

Covers only a limited phase of Michael’s life, leaving out major events.
Over-focus on the father-son conflict makes the narrative feel repetitive.
Lacks emotional depth and feels one-dimensional at times.
Avoids controversial aspects, making it feel overly safe and PR-driven.
Does not deliver the complete satisfaction expected from a biopic of such a legendary figure.

Technicalities

Direction opts for a safe and linear narrative approach.
Cinematography and production design effectively recreate the era.
Background score and song recreations are major highlights.
Editing could have been tighter, especially in the second half.

Rating 2.5/5

Final Verdict

Michael (2026) works as a partial tribute rather than a definitive biopic. While it shines in performances and musical presentation, the limited scope and cautious storytelling hold it back. Fans may enjoy the nostalgia, but those expecting a complete life story of Michael Jackson might leave wanting more.
