Central Government’s Key Decision: Lok Sabha, Assembly Seats to Increase by 50%

By TeluguFunda / March 24, 2026

The Central Government has announced a landmark political reform to boost Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816 and proportionally expand state assembly constituencies by 50 percent. This delimitation move, shared by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in an NDA meeting, addresses southern states’ concerns over population-based seat losses while enhancing representation ahead of post-2026 census redraws.

Delimitation Background

India’s current seat freeze stems from the 42nd Constitutional Amendment, with delimitation frozen until after the first census post-2026 to prevent penalizing family planning success. The proposal applies a uniform 50% increase nationwide, avoiding disproportionate gains for populous northern states like Uttar Pradesh. This fulfills long-pending provisions, such as Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act adjustments paused since 2014.

State-Specific Impacts

Andhra Pradesh assembly seats rise from 175 to 263, Lok Sabha from 25 to 37-38; Telangana from 119 to 179 assemblies. Nationwide, this creates nearly 88 new seats in Andhra alone, opening doors for emerging leaders, especially with planned 30% women’s reservation from 2029 elections. Southern states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka gain proportionally without dilution.

Political Implications

The reform promises fresher representation and balances demographic shifts, but requires constitutional amendments. Critics fear rushed implementation before 2029 polls, though it aligns with past proposals like raising Lok Sabha to 848 or 1000. Chief Ministers like Chandrababu Naidu welcome it as equitable growth.
