Sujeeth Explains Why Ram Charan Film Was Dropped and How OG Happened

By TeluguFunda / September 26, 2025

Director Sujeeth, who just delivered OG with Pawan Kalyan, finally opened up about the long wait after Saaho and why his much-talked-about film with Ram Charan never took off. The director stayed busy with OG post-production until the last minute. He now gives interviews and shares details about his journey over the last few years.

Why Sujeeth and Ram Charan’s Film Didn’t Happen

After releasing Saaho, Sujeeth immediately planned a film with Ram Charan. Charan liked the script, which had a UK backdrop, and agreed to proceed. Then COVID-19 disrupted their plans. International filming restrictions stopped them from moving forward, so the makers shelved the project.

Ram Charan then introduced Sujeeth to Megastar Chiranjeevi, who planned to remake the Malayalam blockbuster Lucifer in Telugu. Sujeeth began working on the film and interacted with Lucifer director Prithviraj Sukumaran. During their conversation, Prithviraj praised Saaho and said the film inspired them to build the cinematic world of Lucifer. The comment gave Sujeeth a reality check. He decided to create something original instead of remaking an existing film. He informed Chiranjeevi about his decision and exited the project.

How OG Became a Reality

With no project in hand, Sujeeth shifted to Mumbai, where Bollywood filmmakers welcomed him. Although many called Saaho a box office failure in Telugu, the film earned over Rs 170 crore in North India and made Sujeeth a sought-after filmmaker. Just when he prepared to start a Hindi film, he received an offer to work with Powerstar Pawan Kalyan.

The first idea focused on a remake project. “The producers believed I excel in technical aspects but lack strong storytelling skills, so they wanted me to direct a remake. I insisted on doing an original story because that excites me more,” Sujeeth said. He eventually convinced Pawan Kalyan with the script of OG. Sujeeth even considered naming the film Original Gangster to make it clear that it was not a remake.

Despite Pawan Kalyan’s hectic political and film schedule, Sujeeth worked tirelessly to shape OG into a stylish gangster drama that matched fan expectations. The film now plays in theatres and draws a strong response at the box office.
