Brahma Anandam Review: A Sweet & Sour Mix of Serious Drama and Silly Comedy.

Brahma Anandam Review, Brahma Anandam Movie Review, Brahmanandam

It’s been a very long time since we saw the comedy of Brahmanandam on the big screen. But, we literally see him everyday, as our beloved meme-lord. Still, we want more of him– the classic Brahmanandam– whom we cherish everyday. Brahma Anandam, written and directed by debutant RVS Nikhil, is not only about giving you the never-forgotten flavour of classic Brahamandam’s humor, it is a film about the lost connections with the family as well as forming new connections at the old age. It’s simple humor that has serious drama in it.

Ananda Ram Murthy (Brahamanandam) plays his age, the role of a grandfather abandoned in an old age home. And, Brahma Anandam (played by Brahmanandam’s real son, Raja Gautham) is a good-for-nothing theatre artist struggling to make his ends meet. Brahma Anandam (Gautham) faces a challenge. He needs 6 Lakh rupees to bribe a fellow curator in Delhi for Kalarangmahosthav, an event for theatre plays. Somehow, he lands up with Murthy after a frustrated drunken night and Murthy promises his 6 acre land if he follows his commands. And, thus, they both travel back to their supposed home-village near Kodad in Telangana.

Comedians are often disrespected as part of a gag. We see them get slapped, insulted, make fools of themselves. Brahmi has done all of those. However, he is one of the most revered actors in TFI. In Brahama Anandam, Murthy is treated as a friend by Brahama Andanam. So, you get to feel that side of Brahmanandam which we always love, instead of making him into a nobel revered character. He convincingly plays around the film as an easy going guy. Yes, we don’t see the energetic Brahmi we saw in our earlier films. Nonetheless, witnessing him after a very long time itself is such a pleasant experience.

Raja Gautham excelled a lot as an actor. He performs the role of a boy-next-door with so much ease, especially his comedic dialogue delivery is very good. We should see more of him as an actor. Although the film has an overall okay-ish feel to it, there is so much that is lacking in the film. The subject matter of the film (abandonment of elders and remarrying at old age) needed a much more mature writing. The portions with Talluri Rameswari should have been with more depth. We don’t see much of her side of the story. And, the music composed by Sandilya Pisapati should have also been better. The background score and songs does not match up with the story.

Overall, Brahma Anandam is a pleasant movie with a few silly jokes here and there. The jokes are not belly-busters. But, the subject matter by Nikhil is a relevant and much needed one.
