“Why Jeans? Shouldn’t Shivaji Wear a Dhoti?”: Chinmayi Slams Actor Shivaji Over His Controversial Remarks

Tollywood actor Shivaji recently landed in controversy following comments he made about heroines’ dressing during the pre-release event of his upcoming film Dandora. His remarks, particularly the language and words he used, triggered strong backlash on social media and drew widespread criticism.

The issue escalated further after popular singer Chinmayi Sripada responded strongly to Shivaji’s statements. Taking to social media, Chinmayi condemned his comments and the derogatory words he allegedly used while speaking about women and their clothing choices.

In her post, Chinmayi criticised Shivaji for using offensive and abusive language on a professional platform. She objected to terms like “saamaan” and other slurs, stating that such language reflects deep-seated misogyny. She further remarked that by making such statements, Shivaji had turned into a “hero for incels” (a term commonly used for men who harbour hatred towards women).

Chinmayi also questioned the hypocrisy in Shivaji’s arguments. While he spoke about Indian culture and tradition, she pointed out that he himself often appears in jeans and hoodies. She sarcastically asked whether he should then restrict himself to wearing only dhotis, apply a traditional forehead mark, and follow all cultural symbols strictly, if he truly believes in enforcing tradition on women.

Expressing her anguish, Chinmayi said that the mindset reflected in Shivaji’s comments towards women was shocking and deeply disturbing. She stated that she found it hard to believe such remarks were made openly at a public event.

Following her post, social media witnessed an outpouring of support for Chinmayi. Many netizens echoed her views and criticised Shivaji’s statements, while her post continued to go viral across platforms.

So what exactly did Shivaji say? During the event, he reportedly remarked that beauty lies in sarees or fully covered clothing and not in outfits that reveal the body. He went on to say that while people may outwardly praise women who wear such clothes, internally they judge them negatively, using highly offensive language.

Shivaji also stated that if anyone questions such views, they are accused of opposing women’s freedom. He claimed that women represent natural beauty and should be respected like nature itself. According to him, glamour should have limits, and freedom is a privilege that should not be misused.

These remarks have now become the centre of intense debate, with many questioning the appropriateness of such statements and language in public forums.
