The alleged sexual harassment case involving Janasena Party MLA and Railway Koduru legislator Arava Sridhar has become a major topic of political and public debate in Andhra Pradesh.
In recent times, allegations related to illicit relationships and sexual harassment involving several political leaders in the state have drawn widespread attention. Critics argue that some leaders, who claim to serve the public, are allegedly misusing their political power under the guise of authority. Against this backdrop, the controversy surrounding Janasena MLA Arava Sridhar has triggered intense discussion.
Allegations by the Woman
According to reports, a female government employee alleged that after Arava Sridhar was elected as an MLA, she congratulated him via Facebook. This interaction allegedly developed into regular conversations on social media. The woman claims that the MLA promised to marry her and maintained an illicit relationship with her for nearly one and a half years.
She further alleged that during this period, she underwent five abortions, which she claims were planned by the MLA. She stated that he deliberately distanced her from her family and allegedly visited her home daily, forcing her into sexual relations. She also accused him of physical abuse when she resisted, leading to serious disputes with her family members.
According to her claims, when the MLA later refused to marry her, she felt left with no option but to approach the media.
The woman further alleged that when she did not open the door, the MLA would stand outside her house, disregarding his position. She claimed that he contacted her husband and family members, threatening them and pressuring her husband to divorce her. As a result, she alleged that her family distanced themselves from her, and her child has not been living with her for the past six months.
She also accused the MLA of issuing threats, including warning her that harm could come to her son if she spoke out. She claimed that after allegedly isolating her socially and emotionally, the MLA told her that marriage was not possible and challenged her to report the matter wherever she wished.
The woman also alleged that the MLA insisted on making video calls while bathing and demanded to see her nude. She further claimed that he had harassed multiple women in a similar manner. To support her allegations, she released videos and chat messages to the media and demanded justice.
Opposition Reaction
Following the emergence of these allegations, opposition party YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders launched a strong attack on the government. They demanded the immediate arrest of MLA Arava Sridhar and called for an independent investigation.
YSRCP leaders described the allegations as a grave crime against women’s safety and the rule of law. Senior women leaders, including RK Roja, Vidadala Rajini, Pushpa Srivani, and Varudu Kalyani, questioned the ruling coalition’s silence. They criticized the government for failing to respond firmly, especially when its leaders have previously claimed a zero-tolerance approach toward crimes against women.
State Women’s Commission Responds
As the controversy intensified, the Andhra Pradesh State Women’s Commission intervened. Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja stated that she spoke with the complainant over the phone and gathered details regarding the incident.
She emphasized that any act violating women’s dignity and safety would not be tolerated and assured that the commission would examine the facts thoroughly and extend support to the complainant if required.
MLA Arava Sridhar’s Response
In response to the allegations, MLA Arava Sridhar categorically denied all accusations. He stated that throughout his political career, he has maintained a clean record and alleged that the accusations were part of a deliberate conspiracy to defame him.
He claimed that he himself had been harassed for the past six months and said that his mother had filed a police complaint regarding the alleged harassment. The MLA also alleged that deepfake videos were being created to malign his image and asserted that he would respond to all allegations legally through the courts.
Statement from the MLA’s Mother
Amid growing controversy, the MLA’s mother Prameelamma also addressed the media, strongly denying the allegations against her son. She described him as innocent and claimed that political rivals were deliberately targeting him for personal and political gain.
She clarified that the complainant was familiar with their family and used to visit their house frequently. According to her, the woman allegedly misused this familiarity and began harassing the MLA under the pretext of seeking help. She alleged that the woman made late-night calls and visited their house at odd hours, causing severe mental distress to the family.
Prameelamma stated that they had previously lodged a complaint with the Railway Koduru police regarding this issue.
