‘War 2’: Box Office Disaster Turns into OTT Blockbuster

One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR may have crashed at the box office, but it has now found redemption on OTT. Despite being labeled a theatrical disaster, the action spectacle has become India’s most-watched film online following its digital debut.

From Box Office Failure to Streaming Sensation

War 2 premiered on Netflix on October 9, and within just a few days, it recorded staggering viewership numbers. As per the latest Ormax report (October 6–12), the film topped the OTT charts in India, registering over 3.5 million views on the platform.

Even Superstar Rajinikanth’s Coolie, whose Hindi version also dropped on OTT last week, couldn’t surpass War 2’s impressive streaming performance. Interestingly, both War 2 and Coolie had a simultaneous theatrical release on August 14 this year.

Mixed Emotions for Fans

While the film’s theatrical run was marked by disappointment and poor word of mouth, fans are now relieved to see War 2 receiving appreciation in the digital space. Many have praised the film’s high-octane action sequences and strong performances, which seem to have connected better with OTT audiences.

Star Power and Big-Scale Vision

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 features Kiara Advani as the female lead, with Anil Kapoor, Ashutosh Rana, and Varun Badola playing key supporting roles.

Despite its underwhelming box office performance, the film’s OTT success proves that strong star power and visual appeal can still drive massive viewership in the streaming era even when theatrical numbers fall short.
