Acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Vetri Maaran finally spoke up about two of his most anticipated projects, Vada Chennai 2 and a new film with Silambarasan. On Monday, he released a detailed video on the official YouTube channel of Grass Root Film Company, where he clarified the status of both films. His update brought much-needed clarity to fans and ended the ongoing speculations.
Vetri Maaran Teams Up with Silambarasan, Not for Vada Chennai 2
Vetri Maaran confirmed that he will direct Silambarasan (Simbu) in his next film, which Kalaipuli S. Thanu will produce under the V Creations banner. He clearly stated that this project is not Vada Chennai 2.
However, the story will unfold in the same universe as Vada Chennai. It will include familiar characters, settings, and follow the same timeline. While this film stands apart from the original story, it retains the same world. Vetri Maaran revealed that when his film Vaadivaasal (starring Suriya) got delayed due to scripting and planning issues, especially regarding animal and actor safety, producer Thanu suggested a meeting with Simbu. After just one narration, they decided to proceed.
Vada Chennai 2 Will Show Anbu’s Rise
Vetri Maaran also confirmed that Vada Chennai 2 remains on track. He revealed its title as “Anbuvin Ezhuchi”, which will focus on the rise of Anbu, played by Dhanush. He added that when the time comes, Dhanush will return to lead the sequel.
Vetri Maaran Denies Copyright Issues with Dhanush
Vetri Maaran addressed rumors suggesting a copyright dispute. He explained that Dhanush, who owns the intellectual property rights to Vada Chennai, holds the legal right to ask for payment if someone reuses elements from the original. But Dhanush didn’t demand any money. In fact, he promised to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for free and told Vetri Maaran to proceed as he wished.
Vetri Maaran criticized the hurtful YouTube videos and rumors that tried to create tension between him and Dhanush. He emphasized that their friendship remains strong. He also shared that when he faced financial difficulties, Dhanush helped him by arranging support from a producer.
Familiar Faces Likely in Silambarasan Film Set in Vada Chennai Universe
Although Vetri Maaran hasn’t revealed the title of the new film with Silambarasan, several reports suggest that Andrea Jeremiah, Samuthirakani, and Kishore may reprise their roles from Vada Chennai. Reports also hint that Kavin and Manikandan will join the cast, though no official confirmation has come yet.
Interestingly, Vetri Maaran initially planned Vada Chennai with Silambarasan in the lead role. But the project didn’t take off, and eventually, Dhanush took the role, turning the film into a massive success. Now, years later, Simbu finally enters the Vada Chennai world, this time with a new story and perspective.
