Venezuela Earthquake 2026: Twin Quakes Trigger Massive Destruction, Death Toll Could Reach 10,000

A devastating natural disaster has struck Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes hit the South American nation within seconds of each other, triggering widespread destruction and raising fears of a massive loss of life.

According to preliminary estimates cited in reports, the disaster could have claimed as many as 10,000 lives, while some projections warn that the final toll may be significantly higher if the extent of the damage is confirmed.

The first earthquake reportedly measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and struck at around 3:34 AM IST. Just 40 seconds later, a second and even stronger quake measuring 7.5 followed. The shallow depth of the earthquakes estimated at just 10 to 13 kilometers below the surface intensified the destructive impact.

The epicenter was reportedly located near Morón on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, approximately 160 kilometers west of the capital city, Caracas. Tremors were felt across large parts of the country and reportedly reached neighboring Colombia, including the capital city of Bogotá.

Several multi-storey residential and commercial buildings are believed to have collapsed in Caracas, particularly in areas such as Altamira. Emergency responders are racing against time to rescue people trapped beneath the rubble, though rescue operations have been complicated by damaged infrastructure and communication failures.

The earthquakes also caused widespread power outages and internet disruptions across affected regions. Authorities temporarily suspended operations at Caracas International Airport after reports of damage to airport facilities and sections of the runway.

Given the coastal location of the epicenter, officials issued tsunami warnings as a precautionary measure. Residents in vulnerable coastal zones were advised to remain alert and follow emergency instructions.

The timing of the disaster has added to concerns. The earthquakes struck on a national holiday commemorating a historic military victory associated with Venezuela’s independence movement, meaning many people were at home when the buildings collapsed.

As rescue teams continue to assess the damage, Venezuela faces one of the most serious natural disasters in its modern history. Authorities are expected to release official casualty and damage figures once emergency assessments are completed.
