US Senators Seek Tariff Relief After India Slaps 30% Duty on American Pulse Crops

By TeluguFunda / January 19, 2026

India’s imposition of a 30% tariff on US pulse crops, including yellow peas, has sparked concern among American farmers, particularly in key producing states such as North Dakota and Montana. The move has curtailed access to India, the world’s largest pulse market, dealing a setback to US agricultural exports.

Reacting to the development, US Senators Kevin Cramer and Steve Daines have urged President Donald Trump to raise the issue directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They have called for tariff relief for US pulse exports as part of the ongoing India–US trade talks.

The senators said the higher duty has negatively impacted farm incomes and limited export opportunities, stressing that resolving the issue is crucial for American growers. They also underlined the importance of agricultural trade in strengthening bilateral ties between India and the United States.
