The Donald Trump administration in the United States is intensifying its efforts to curb illegal immigration, introducing a new voluntary departure initiative that includes financial incentives and free airfare for eligible immigrants willing to leave the country on their own.
According to a recent social media announcement by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), non-criminal undocumented immigrants can now opt for a voluntary self-deportation program through the CBP Home app. Under this scheme, eligible participants will receive $2,600 in cash along with a complimentary flight ticket to their home country.
Previously, the US government offered roughly $1,000 as part of voluntary departure programs. The significant increase in the incentive reflects the administration’s tougher stance on immigration enforcement.
With Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other authorities stepping up operations across the country, undocumented immigrants are reportedly living under constant fear of detention and deportation. In this context, the DHS’s latest offer may appear to some as a safer and more dignified alternative.
For those prepared to leave voluntarily, the incentive could be seen as a practical option compared to the uncertainty and psychological strain associated with being detained by ICE, where the deportation process can be physically and mentally exhausting.
While the policy has sparked debate, it marks a notable shift in how the US administration is attempting to address illegal immigration by combining strict enforcement with financial inducements for voluntary exit.
