Trump Halts Green Card Lottery Program Following Deadly Shooting

Former US President Donald Trump has once again taken a tough stance on immigration by suspending the Green Card Lottery system with immediate effect. The move aligns with his long-held opposition to policies that allow non-Americans to settle permanently in the United States.

The decision comes in the wake of a tragic shooting incident at Brown University College, in which two American students and an MIT professor were killed, while nine others sustained serious injuries. The prime suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, a Portuguese national, reportedly entered the US in 2017 through the Diversity Visa Program popularly known as the Green Card Lottery.

Reacting to the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has been directed to pause the DV-1 program. Taking to X, she stated, “At President Trump’s direction, I am immediately directing USCIS to pause the DV-1 program to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program.”

Introduced under the Immigration Act of 1990, the Diversity Visa Program grants immigrant visas—eventually leading to permanent residency to individuals from countries with low immigration rates to the US. Each year, nearly 50,000 green cards are allocated through this lottery-based system.

Trump has consistently criticized the program, arguing that it poses security risks and lacks merit-based scrutiny. The recent shooting appears to have strengthened his resolve to push for stricter immigration controls. Earlier this year, he also imposed a broad travel ban on select countries following the shooting of two National Guard soldiers by an Afghan national.

With this latest decision, Trump has signaled yet another major shift in US immigration policy, reinforcing his hardline approach amid growing national security concerns.
