Trump Calls Modi a Friend, Hints at Strong US–India Trade Deal

By TeluguFunda / January 22, 2026

United States President Donald Trump, known for his unpredictable and often impulsive approach to global politics, has once again sent mixed signals on India–US trade relations. While his administration has imposed tariffs on Indian goods, Trump has now indicated that a positive trade agreement with India could be on the horizon.

Responding to a question about the current relationship between India and the United States, Trump offered a familiar and upbeat remark. Speaking about the possibility of a trade deal, he said, “I have great respect for your Prime Minister, Modi. He’s a fantastic man and a friend of mine. We are going to have a good deal.”

Although the statement sounds encouraging on the surface, Trump’s history of abrupt policy shifts makes it difficult to predict the actual outcome. Observers note that any meaningful progress in trade talks would likely require the US to soften or roll back existing tariffs on India.

The timing of Trump’s comments is also significant. His remarks come just a day after the European Union announced that it is close to finalising what it described as the “mother of all deals” with India. This development could add pressure on Washington to recalibrate its trade stance toward New Delhi.

At a fundamental level, easing tariff barriers appears essential if India and the United States are to move toward a substantive and mutually beneficial trade agreement in the near future.
