The Penguin (2024): The Darkness of DC World and the Gloomy Mood of Matt Reeve’s The Batman

HBO brings in the darker world of Gotham with an utterly unidentifiable character transformation of Colin Farrell playing the underdog small-time ambitious kingpin, Oswald Cobb.

The eight-part series developed by Lauren LeFranc and Matt Reeves as Creative Producer is based on characters created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

Anyone who is slightly familiar with Gotham–the Batman’s hometown for vigilantism– knows that its a crime city. Crime happens all the time. The darkness of the DC world is not just in lighting but also the characters, the iconic maniac characters we saw in The Dark Knight and Joker are testament to the legacy of the darkest underworld ruining Gotham city.

Oz is not the vigilante in this limited spin off series of Matt Reeve’s Batman. He is the underdog with ambitions but no power. He gets an accomplice in this pilot episode, Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz). He has also made some enemies too, and some friends too. The ruthless hunger for power and money through the drug business and personal history of revenge of everyone is a dramatic act set to take off from this pilot episode.

The cinematography by Darran Tiernan and the gloomy rainy rides and chases in Gotham streets are reminiscences of a classic high-end video game. It all adds upto the eerie feeling that a dark DC movie usually has.

The pilot episode is now streaming on Jio Cinema in India and a new episode will drop on every Monday.
