Film producer Suryadevara Naga Vamsi has finally broken his silence on the disappointing box office result of War 2. Despite massive pre-release buzz and sky-high expectations, the Telugu version of the Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR starrer failed to perform as expected, ending up with an average run and mixed reviews.
For Naga Vamsi, filmmaking has always been a high-risk business. Sometimes small films turn into massive hits, while big-budget ones with star-studded lineups can falter. Unfortunately, War 2 turned out to be one of those unexpected setbacks for the producer, who had acquired the Telugu rights for a fancy price, hoping to ride on Jr NTR’s craze in the Telugu states.
Being a huge admirer of Jr NTR, Naga Vamsi had earlier released Devara on a grand scale and carried the same enthusiasm into War 2. He believed the NTR–Hrithik combo would create history at the box office. However, the film’s underwhelming response came as a major blow.
To add to the situation, a clip from the War 2 Telugu pre-release event went viral after the film’s release. In the video, Naga Vamsi had boldly stated that if audiences weren’t satisfied after watching War 2, he would personally take the mic again and ask them to watch it a statement that came back to haunt him after the mixed response.
Addressing this issue during a recent interview promoting Mass Jathara alongside Ravi Teja, Naga Vamsi candidly said,
“Everyone makes mistakes, right? A mistake happened what can we do now?”
He elaborated further, saying,
“Both I and NTR believed in a big man like Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Films. The mistake happened on their side, and we just got caught in between. But everyone started blaming me.”
By these remarks, Naga Vamsi subtly indicated that the failure lay with the original makers (YRF) and not with the distributors who trusted the brand and the content. “We only trusted a reputed production house. The content wasn’t in our hands,” he clarified.
On a lighter note, Naga Vamsi added that he was somewhat relieved that the failure didn’t come from one of his own productions:
“At least it wasn’t our own film that failed we just got caught with someone else’s. So, I’m happy!”
With these statements, Naga Vamsi has made his stance clear while he accepts the distribution risk, he maintains that the responsibility for War 2’s performance ultimately lies with its creators.
