The Bengal Files Box Office Struggles: Vivek Agnihotri’s Bold Film Fails to Click

By TeluguFunda / September 9, 2025

Director Vivek Agnihotri released The Bengal Files in cinemas on 5 September 2025 with high expectations and heavy controversy. The movie marks the final part of Agnihotri’s “Files Trilogy” after The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. It tackles sensitive events from Bengal’s history. Despite heated debates and strong political reactions, the film struggles at the box office as collections drop sharply after its opening weekend.

The Bengal Files Box Office Collection Day 4

The film earned Rs 1.75 crore on Friday and jumped to Rs 2.25 crore on Saturday. On Sunday, it collected Rs 2.75 crore, which gave the film some hope. But on Monday, earnings crashed to Rs 1.10 crore, pushing the total to Rs 7.85 crore nett in India.

Trade analysts compare the performance with The Kashmir Files and find it very weak. They highlight that The Bengal Files earned only about 25% of The Kashmir Files’ weekend business, which shows that audience response remains limited.

Clash with Big Releases

The movie faced stiff competition at the box office. Tiger Shroff’s action film Baaghi 4 and Hollywood horror The Conjuring: Last Rites pulled in more viewers. As a result, Agnihotri’s drama struggled for screens and attention. Reports also reveal that distributors and exhibitors in West Bengal refused to screen the film, which further restricted its reach.

Political and Public Reactions

The release of The Bengal Files triggered a war of words between political parties. The BJP accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of deliberately blocking the film. The state government, however, denied placing any ban. Critics attacked the film, claiming it distorts history and serves as propaganda. At the same time, several audience members argued that such films risk fueling communal tension.

Storyline and Cast

The Bengal Files draws inspiration from the Direct Action Day of 1946 and the Noakhali riots. It portrays large-scale violence between Hindus and Muslims and highlights these tragic chapters through fictionalized drama.

The cast features Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, and Simrat Kaur. The film also stars Saswata Chatterjee, Puneet Issar, Namashi Chakraborty, Rajesh Khera, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Sourav Das, and Mohan Kapur.
