Telugu movie

Bollywood actress Radhika Apte has once again triggered a debate among Telugu movie lovers with her comments about her experiences in South Indian cinema. Her remarks have raised questions about whether she is being unnecessarily critical of South films, particularly Telugu cinema, despite having worked in only a handful of projects in the industry.

Speaking about her experience working in South Indian films, Radhika Apte revealed that she was once asked to play a character who had to marry her own uncle. She also recalled being paired opposite a much older hero, while her character was eventually killed halfway through the film. She cited these experiences as examples of patriarchy and the unequal treatment of women in the film industry.

However, her comments have raised another question among netizens: Didn’t she know about the story and the nature of her character before signing the film?

Why Accept a Role If She Had Concerns?

Generally, actors listen to the narration and understand their characters before agreeing to a project. If Radhika had reservations about the storyline, the age difference with her co-star or the fate of her character, she could have declined the offer. Speaking about uncomfortable experiences is completely fair, but questioning the industry’s practices years later has sparked a different kind of discussion.

Why Single Out Telugu Cinema?

Interestingly, Radhika Apte has also been part of Bollywood projects such as Lust Stories, which explored bold and controversial themes. There is nothing wrong with choosing unconventional roles, and every actress has the freedom to make her own career decisions. However, some Telugu movie fans are questioning why certain storytelling choices become a major talking point when they happen in South Indian films.

Like every other film industry, Telugu cinema has its share of shortcomings, including issues related to women’s representation and characterisation. Bollywood, too, has produced films featuring controversial relationships, uncomfortable storylines and unequal treatment of female characters.

Ultimately, the question doing the rounds on social media is simple: If Radhika Apte had such strong reservations about the role and its storyline, why did she agree to be part of the film in the first place? Her comments have once again opened up a debate about the way South Indian cinema is perceived compared to Bollywood.
