In a landmark development, the Supreme Court of India has ordered a CBI investigation into the tragic Karur stampede that occurred on September 27, during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamizha Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, which claimed 41 lives.
A bench comprising Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice N.V. Anjaria observed that the incident “has shaken the national conscience” and stressed the need for a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation. The Court emphasized that citizens are entitled to a fair probe, especially in cases involving the violation of fundamental rights.
CBI Inquiry Under Supreme Court Supervision
To ensure complete transparency, the Supreme Court has constituted a three-member Supervisory Committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi. Justice Rastogi will handpick two senior IPS officers, not belonging to Tamil Nadu, to assist in the investigation.
The CBI has been directed to submit monthly progress reports to the committee, which will monitor every stage of the inquiry.
Supreme Court Criticizes Madras High Court Intervention
The apex court strongly criticized the Madras High Court (Chennai Bench) for forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising Tamil Nadu Police officials in response to a petition that merely sought the formulation of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for political rallies.
The Supreme Court clarified that the Karur incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Madurai Bench of the High Court, and hence the Chennai Bench had no authority to intervene in the matter.
Court Raises Key Questions
The bench raised serious questions about the state administration’s handling of the rally, particularly:
Why was TVK permitted to hold the event when AIADMK’s earlier request for the same venue had been denied for safety reasons?
Why were postmortems of 30–40 victims conducted late at night, followed by cremations at 4 a.m.?
These irregularities, the Court noted, warranted a neutral probe to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Political Impact: Boost for Vijay, Setback for DMK
The verdict comes as a setback for the Tamil Nadu government and a significant relief for Vijay and his party TVK, who had consistently demanded an independent investigation into the tragedy.
Over the past ten days, the DMK had attempted to use the incident to politically corner Vijay. However, the Supreme Court’s intervention is expected to neutralize that criticism and restore TVK’s credibility in the public eye.
The ruling also provides Vijay with valuable time to restructure his political strategy, revive campaign momentum, and explore coalition possibilities ahead of the upcoming elections.
With the CBI taking over and the probe now under Supreme Court supervision, all eyes are on the next steps as justice for the victims and political clarity for Tamil Nadu begin to take shape.
