SSMB29 Sets New Record with India’s Most Expensive Film Set Ever Built

By TeluguFunda / June 19, 2025

SSMB29, the upcoming fantasy-action adventure featuring Mahesh Babu and directed by SS Rajamouli, is creating massive buzz even before it gets an official title. The film has stunned the industry with one groundbreaking update, it includes the most expensive set ever built in Indian cinema, costing a whopping Rs 50 crore.

Rajamouli built an entire replica of Kashi (Varanasi) in Hyderabad, complete with historic ghats, temples, and intricate details. He chose to construct the set instead of shooting in the actual city to avoid logistical hurdles. The detailed replica offers stunning visual depth that even the best CGI struggles to match. Leaked images have surfaced online, and fans across the country are praising the craftsmanship and scale of this massive creation.

SSMB29 Marks Rajamouli’s First Project After RRR, Featuring a Power-Packed Cast

Rajamouli returns to direction after delivering the global hit RRR, and expectations have skyrocketed for his next big film. In SSMB29, Mahesh Babu plays a unique and never-before-seen role. Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead, while Prithviraj Sukumaran and R. Madhavan also bring their star power to the cast. With this talented lineup and Rajamouli’s vision, audiences already call it one of the most awaited cinematic events in India.

SSMB29 Crushes Previous Records of Big-Budget Film Sets

Before SSMB29, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas held the record for the most expensive set, with the iconic Chandramukhi kotha costing Rs 12 crore back in 2002. Later, films like Bajirao Mastani, Heeramandi, Baahubali, Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo, and Thugs of Hindostan spent Rs 15–20 crore on their grandest sets. Even Anurag Kashyap recreated 1960s Bombay in Sri Lanka for Bombay Velvet at a hefty cost. Still, none of these productions reached the Rs 50 crore mark that SSMB29 just crossed.

Raja Saab’s Vast Indoor Set Still Falls Short on Cost

Prabhas’ The Raja Saab also made headlines for building the world’s largest indoor set, covering 38,000 square feet over six months. However, the filmmakers haven’t revealed the set’s actual cost. Even with its size, it doesn’t match SSMB29 in budget, making Rajamouli’s project the most expensive in Indian set design history.

SSMB29 Elevates Real-Set Filmmaking to New Heights

While modern filmmakers increasingly use CGI and VFX, Rajamouli chooses real-world scale over virtual effects. His ₹50 crore Kashi set in SSMB29 proves that practical filmmaking can still deliver unmatched richness and authenticity. With Mahesh Babu in the lead and Rajamouli’s storytelling brilliance, SSMB29 stands poised to redefine the future of Indian cinematic spectacle.
