Saalumarada Thimmakka Passes Away at 114: India Loses Its Beloved “Mother of Trees”

At a time when many who vowed to protect the environment instead enabled deforestation, illegal logging, and the destruction of natural resources, the country has lost a woman who lived her entire life in service of nature. Saalumarada Thimmakka, celebrated across India as the “Mother of Trees,” has passed away at the age of 114.

Hailing from a small village in Karnataka, Thimmakka transformed her personal pain into a mission of profound purpose. Unable to have children, she and her husband Chikkayya made an extraordinary decision to raise a family of trees. What began as a simple act of love became a legendary environmental movement. Through daily labour and boundless affection, the couple nurtured over 8,000 trees, including 375 magnificent banyan trees planted along a once-barren stretch of land.

Her work was never about fame, money, or power. Thimmakka’s life was a testament to dedication, humility, and unconditional love for Mother Earth. The forests she created now stand as living monuments to her compassion, providing shade, shelter, and life to countless beings.

Even though the “Mother of Trees” is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in every sapling planted in her memory. Her legacy inspires citizens to plant trees, protect the environment, and take responsibility for the planet’s future.

Saalumarada Thimmakka’s life serves as a powerful reminder:
One person, one vision, and one act of pure love can truly change the world.
