Rs 4000 Cr Budget Confirmed for ‘Ramayana’: India’s Most Expensive Film Ever Announced

By TeluguFunda / July 15, 2025

Producer Namit Malhotra has officially confirmed that Ramayana will become India’s most expensive film, with a jaw-dropping budget of Rs 4000 crore. This grand mythological epic features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Yash as Ravana, and the makers are creating it in two parts. Malhotra revealed during a recent podcast that the production team will spend around 500 million dollars, nearly Rs 4000 crore, to complete both films.

Ramayana Sets a New Benchmark in Indian Film Budgets

Until now, no Indian film budget had crossed Rs 1000 crore. Ramayana has broken that barrier and set a new standard. The film now stands as the most expensive project in Indian cinema history, and it also joins the ranks of the most costly franchises in global cinema. Malhotra emphasized that even though they are spending a massive amount, they are still keeping the cost lower than many Hollywood blockbusters while aiming for equal or higher cinematic impact.

Namit Malhotra Personally Drives This Mega Film

Malhotra has taken full financial responsibility for Ramayana, instead of depending on studios or external investors. As the head of Prime Focus, a top global VFX company, he has previously contributed to international hits like Inception, Dune, and Interstellar. He shared that he first conceptualized this project 6–7 years ago, shortly after the pandemic. Despite others doubting the scale and feasibility, he stayed determined to bring the idea to life. For him, Ramayana is not just a movie, it’s a mission to showcase Indian mythology with global cinematic quality.

Hollywood-Inspired Vision, Indian Soul

Malhotra discovered his love for filmmaking after watching Jurassic Park as a child. That experience sparked his passion for visual storytelling and world-building. Over the years, he noticed how international films often underrepresented India. Through Ramayana, he aims to change that perception by presenting a visually stunning and culturally rich version of India’s most iconic epic.

Star-Studded Cast and Global Release Strategy

Director Nitesh Tiwari, who delivered hits like Dangal and Chhichhore, will lead this project. The cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman. The team plans to release the film worldwide in multiple languages, aiming to match the global appeal of franchises like Marvel and DC.

They have scheduled Part 1 for Diwali 2026, and Part 2 will arrive in Diwali 2027.
