Legendary Tamil film producer and AVM Productions chief M. Saravanan passed away on Thursday morning in Chennai due to age-related ailments. He was 86. His mortal remains will be kept at AVM Studios for the public to pay their respects. Widely regarded as one of the pillars of Kollywood, Saravanan leaves behind an enduring cinematic legacy.
Born in 1939, Saravanan was the son of A.V. Meiyappan, the visionary founder of AVM Productions. He carried forward his father’s legacy with distinction, producing several acclaimed films alongside his brother M. Balasubramaniam. In 1986, he also served as the Sheriff of Madras, further cementing his stature in public life.
After taking charge of AVM Studios in the 1950s, Saravanan played a transformative role in elevating the brand’s reputation beyond Tamil cinema. Over the next five decades, AVM Productions emerged as one of India’s most trusted banners, delivering successful films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi languages.
Some of the most notable films produced under his leadership include Leader, Sivaji, Gemini, Naanum Oru Penn, Samsaram Adhu Minsaram, and Ayan. He also won two Filmfare Awards as a producer. His son, M.S. Guhan, continues the family’s involvement in filmmaking and heads the company today. After 2010, AVM moved away from feature film production and focused on creating web series and digital content.
Following the announcement of his demise, heartfelt condolences poured in from across the film fraternity and political spectrum, reflecting the deep respect Saravanan commanded in Indian cinema.
