Ram Gopal Varma Criticizes War 2 for Style Over Storytelling

By TeluguFunda / August 25, 2025

Director Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) openly criticized War 2, the highly awaited film starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. He said the film focuses too much on grand visuals and ignores emotional depth. He argued that the movie sacrifices storytelling for extravagance, which makes it harder for viewers to connect with the plot.

RGV on Excessive Visuals in War 2

RGV said many scenes in War 2 look more designed for trailers than for the theater. He pointed out the heavy use of drone shots and top-angle visuals. He argued that these shots may look striking but fail to draw the audience into the story. “Such visuals might impress in a trailer, but inside a theater, they stop people from bonding with the film,” he remarked.

He explained that cinema should balance spectacle with emotion, but War 2 lets scale overshadow the narrative. Instead of pulling viewers closer, the larger-than-life visuals push them away.

Comparison with SS Rajamouli’s Style

Varma compared War 2 with SS Rajamouli’s films, where grand visuals always serve the story. He praised Rajamouli for creating big action sequences that fit naturally into the plot. In contrast, he said War 2 tries too hard to build “elevation moments” that look massive but carry no meaning.

“When you add heaviness without purpose, the audience loses trust,” he warned. He stressed that filmmakers should only add spectacle when the story truly demands it.

Hrithik Roshan’s Entry Scene Disappointment

RGV strongly criticized Hrithik Roshan’s entry fight sequence. He said he asked someone from the production team why they included such a scene. The person replied, “We added it to make the film feel new.” Varma said this answer stunned him, because true freshness comes from the story, not from random heaviness.

RGV’s Final Warning to Filmmakers

In his closing note, RGV warned that over-the-top scenes can damage a film more than elevate it. He said that if a sequence does not serve the story, forcing it will only weaken the narrative. He even joked that he sometimes thinks about doing YouTube-style reviews, but he avoids them because he does not want to hurt people he knows in the industry.

Through his critique, RGV made it clear that while War 2 offers scale and glamour, it risks losing the most important part of cinema, an emotional connection with the audience.
