Superstar Rajinikanth has finally opened up about the real reason he turned politically against late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. In a newly released documentary on the life of veteran leader and film producer RM Veerappan, Rajinikanth shared a powerful memory that he says still haunts him.

The documentary, titled The King Maker, features Rajinikanth speaking about an incident during the 100th-day celebration of his blockbuster film Baashha in 1995. RM Veerappan, also known as RMV, was both the producer of the film and a cabinet minister in Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK government at the time. During the event, Rajinikanth made remarks criticizing the rising “bomb culture” in Tamil Nadu. Although he didn’t target Jayalalithaa directly, the speech was seen as a sharp criticism of her leadership.

RM Veerappan’s Sudden Sacking Changed Everything

Rajinikanth explained that because RMV was standing beside him on stage and didn’t object to the remarks, Jayalalithaa removed him from his ministerial post. The superstar said he felt devastated after hearing about RMV’s dismissal. He couldn’t sleep that night and tried calling RMV to apologise. When RMV finally picked up the call the next morning, he acted as if nothing had happened and even asked about Rajinikanth’s next shoot. The actor said this left a deep emotional wound that he still carries today.

Rajinikanth also revealed that he offered to speak to Jayalalithaa to explain the situation, but RMV told him not to. RMV advised him not to “spoil your name” and said it was not necessary to get his post back. Rajinikanth called him a true gentleman and a kingmaker for handling the situation with dignity and grace.

Other Incidents That Fueled the Rivalry

This wasn’t the only moment that caused friction between Rajinikanth and Jayalalithaa. In earlier years, the actor was reportedly offended when his car was stopped to make way for the Chief Minister’s convoy. He saw this as a symbol of political arrogance. These personal experiences, combined with the 1995 Baashha incident, eventually shaped his public stance against Jayalalithaa.

In the 1996 elections, Rajinikanth openly supported the DMK-TMC alliance, which defeated Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK. People saw his support as a major reason for that loss, proving his massive political influence despite not contesting elections himself.

A Legendary Producer and Political Strategist

RM Veerappan wasn’t just a political figure. He produced several hit films featuring stars like MGR, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan. After MGR left the DMK, RMV helped him launch the AIADMK party and played a crucial role in shaping its future.

He held ministerial positions multiple times from 1977 to 1996 and earned recognition as a stalwart of the Dravidian movement.

Rajinikanth’s emotional tribute in the documentary shines new light on the personal struggles behind his political opinions. It also highlights RM Veerappan’s legacy as both a film legend and a respected political strategist.
