Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is set to play the antagonist in Superstar Mahesh Babu’s upcoming epic Varanasi directed by SS Rajamouli, seems to be facing turbulence off-screen even as he juggles one of the busiest phases of his career.
Apart from Varanasi, the actor is simultaneously handling multiple projects such as I, Nobody, Khalifa, Santhosh Trophy, and the Hindi film Daayra. Yet none of these are the cause of his current struggle. Instead, all the spotlight has turned toward his latest release, Vilayath Buddha, and the unexpected controversy surrounding it.
Released on 21 November, Vilayath Buddha has had a difficult run at the box office, collecting around ₹4.33 crore so far an underwhelming figure, especially when compared to Prithviraj’s blockbuster Empuraan, which crossed the ₹300-crore mark with ease. This stark contrast has raised eyebrows, and one person who believes something unusual is happening is Prithviraj’s mother, Mallika Sukumaran.
In a candid interview with a Malayalam media outlet, Mallika expressed serious concerns, suggesting that the film is being deliberately sabotaged. According to her, certain individuals are intentionally attempting to derail Prithviraj’s strong momentum and paint the film in a negative light.
Mallika stated that this is not the first time her son has been unfairly targeted, recalling previous instances where he faced similar hostility with little support from those around him. She added that the current online backlash against him appears forced and unreasonable, making the situation all the more painful to watch as a mother.
She believes jealousy over Prithviraj’s remarkable rise in the industry may be motivating some of these attacks. Though visibly disturbed by the developments, Mallika also sounded resolute, noting that she did not expect matters to deteriorate this much but is prepared to continue speaking out if the pattern persists.
As Vilayath Buddha continues its theatrical run, the conversation around the alleged campaign against Prithviraj only seems to be gaining momentum raising questions about whether the backlash is organic criticism or something more orchestrated.
