Prashanth Neel Reveals He Enjoys Watching Films Like ‘Inception’ More Than His Own Action Blockbusters

Director Prashanth Neel, known for making high-octane action films like KGF and Salaar, recently made a surprising revelation. Despite delivering some of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbusters, he admitted that he personally enjoys watching completely different types of films. If given a choice, he would prefer making movies like Inception or the classic Bollywood family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

Neel’s True Taste in Cinema

During an interaction with actress Amala Akkineni at the Annapurna College of Film and Media, Neel spoke candidly about his filmmaking approach. He explained that while he has directed only action-packed commercial films, they are not the kind of movies he watches for entertainment. He stated, “I have made four films, and they are all mass entertainers. But these are not the kind of films I sit and watch on television.”

Further clarifying his stance, he said, “If I had complete creative freedom, I would make a film like Inception. I would also love to make a love story or something like Hum Aapke Hain Koun. But the reality is, the South Indian film industry thrives on mass movies. The business and box office revenue lie in action-packed narratives.”

Balancing Art with Commercial Success

Neel’s career has been built on action thrillers, but he acknowledges that financial success plays a huge role in his choices. He admitted that his films are shaped more by market demand than personal passion. “I am not here to make a difference; I am here to make a livelihood. Creativity comes from necessity. If I am making a film for Prabhas, Yash, or Jr NTR, I cannot make Hum Aapke Hain Koun.”

This pragmatic approach is something Neel has consistently emphasized. During the promotion of Salaar: Part 1, he had previously stated, “For me, it’s always about money. Reputation or fear of repetition doesn’t matter. What I did in Ugramm, I did in KGF. What I did in KGF, I did in Salaar. If the box office is strong, why should I worry?”

Upcoming Projects: ‘Salaar 2’ and ‘Dragon’

Neel is currently busy with multiple high-profile projects. He is working on Salaar: Part 2 – Shouryanga Parvam, the sequel to the Prabhas-starrer Salaar. The first film was a massive success, and expectations are even higher for the sequel, which also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and Jagapathi Babu.

Additionally, Neel has begun work on his next project, tentatively titled NTR31, rumored to be called Dragon. The film stars Jr NTR, and production is already underway, with the actor expected to join the shoot soon.
