Young actor Chandra Hass, son of popular television and film actor Prabhakar, has landed in controversy just days before the release of his upcoming film Barabar Premistha. The film, directed by Sampath Rudra and produced by G Chandu and Gayatri Chinny, is scheduled to hit theatres on February 6. However, an incident at its pre-release event has triggered widespread criticism and legal action.
During the promotional event, Chandra Hass performed a song live on stage that reportedly contained vulgar and unparliamentary language. The performance shocked several attendees and quickly drew backlash from both the audience and members of the film industry. The event was attended by noted personalities including JD Chakravarthy, Jayanth C Paranjee, Aadi Saikumar, and Chandra Hass’s father Prabhakar. Miss India finalist Meghna Mukherjee plays the female lead in the film, while Arjun Mahi essays the antagonist.
Videos of the performance soon began circulating on social media, drawing sharp criticism from netizens. Many condemned the use of offensive language at a public event, especially one attended by families and young audiences. The controversy intensified after actor JD Chakravarthy, who was present at the event, issued a strong statement expressing his disappointment.
“I strongly believe films should be promoted through creativity, not vulgarity. I was shocked by what unfolded on stage and now regret not walking out midway,” JD Chakravarthy stated, adding that such presentations degrade the purpose of film promotions.
Responding to the backlash, Chandra Hass released a video statement on Instagram, defending his actions. He stated that he stood by the words used during the performance and made it clear that he would not apologise. According to the actor, the language in the song was drawn directly from abusive comments he had received on social media, and he claimed he did not introduce any new offensive terms. He said the performance was meant to reflect his emotions and personal experiences rather than offend anyone. The video further fuelled debate online.
The issue soon took a legal turn when a complaint was filed against Chandra Hass at the Madhapur police station. The complaint, lodged by an Executive Editor from Big TV, alleged that the actor used obscene language at a public event and that his subsequent video response contained threatening remarks. Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and are currently investigating the matter.
As the controversy continues to gain momentum, several voices from within and outside the film industry have condemned the use of vulgar language on public platforms. Critics argue that such behaviour disrespects the Telugu language and cultural values, and sets a poor example. While some have demanded a public apology from the actor, others see the incident as part of a growing trend of shock-value publicity.
Amid the ongoing backlash, producer Chinny and director Sampath Rudra released a statement expressing regret over the incident. “We sincerely regret the language used by Chandra Hass during the event. He was only trying to explain his character from the film and sang the song in that context. However, Barabar Premistha is a clean film with a U certificate, and those words are not part of the movie. We regret the incident,” the statement read.
With Barabar Premistha gearing up for release under the shadow of controversy, it remains to be seen whether the issue will impact the film’s box-office prospects. For now, Chandra Hass continues to face intense scrutiny as the debate unfolds.
