Tollywood star Pawan Kalyan, now the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, entered politics in 2014 and led his party to a massive win in the 2024 elections. However, in a surprising twist, he recently revealed that he would have never joined politics if he had made one specific film over 20 years ago. That film, Satyagrahi, was a bold project he planned to direct right after his debut directorial, Johnny.
In a recent interview, senior producer A.M. Rathnam revealed this shocking update. While promoting Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Rathnam recalled how Satyagrahi could have changed the course of Pawan’s life. He said, “We launched Satyagrahi in 2003 with a big event. I agreed to produce it. But Pawan garu didn’t complete the script. After Johnny failed, he probably lost interest.” Pawan eventually shelved the project without moving it forward.
Satyagrahi, The Film That Could Have Redefined Pawan Kalyan’s Career
Pawan didn’t treat Satyagrahi like an ordinary movie. He based it on the Emergency-era movement led by Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan. He felt strongly about the subject and wanted to direct it himself. Rathnam trusted Pawan’s talent and believed the story had great emotional and political weight.
Recently, Rathnam met Pawan again and brought up Satyagrahi. During the conversation, Pawan surprised him by saying, “If you had insisted on making Satyagrahi, I would have become a full-time filmmaker like Aamir Khan and never entered politics.” This powerful remark shows how much Pawan believed in the film and his own directorial skills.
Why Pawan Kalyan Walked Away from Satyagrahi Despite Big Plans
Even though Satyagrahi had a strong message and a passionate producer, Pawan chose to step away from it. Rathnam said he respected Pawan’s mindset and avoided pressuring him to continue. He felt that if Pawan had lost interest, then forcing him would not have worked.
Still, Pawan’s recent comment reveals that he had great faith in the project. He believed Satyagrahi could have made him a serious director and kept him focused on films instead of public life.
In the end, Pawan never completed Satyagraha, but the film still shaped a key turning point in his life. It reminds fans of the moment where cinema and politics clashed, and how one unmade film almost changed everything.
