Ajith Kumar delivers yet another disappointment after Thunivu and Valimai. Pattudala (Vidaamuyarchi in Tamil) is a very dry lacklustre road-thriller that fails to keep its tagline: ‘Perseverance Triumph.’
Road-thrillers can be interesting. Pattudala tries a lot to be one. However, it falls flat at every turn. Arjun (Ajith Kumar) and Kayal (Trisha) are an unhappy married couple set in Azerbaijan, who were once lovers. The happy moments fade away soon in the movie after a couple of unimpressionable Anirudh numbers. Thanks to the seamless quick editing of NB Srikanth who didn’t let the love track drag like the rest of the film really is. However, even the short spanned love track also feels like the film maker has been taking lengthier routes just to establish the fate of their state of relationship.
The rest of the film is about the sudden disappearance of Kayal in their last journey after their verbal announcement of a divorce . Deepika (Regina Cassandra) and Rakshith (Arjun Sarja) make an entry as good willed common people and turn evil after a while. The characterisation of both as mentally affected patients reminded me of the relationship of Joker and Harley Quinzel. But, that doesn’t take any precedence. It was just used as an easy excuse for portraying the devilishness and cruelty.
Pattudala is brave in its attempt to create a vulnerable hero who takes the beating. But, Pattudala really tests the patience in an attempt to create a restrained hero stuck in circumstances where everyone tries to deceive, especially the director Magizh Thirumeni by deliberately making characters to perform in such a way only to make them act the opposite way after a while. The twists are neither organic nor necessary if the makers wanna just make the caricatures of bad and ugly.
Ajith Kumar’s actionless action road thriller is a dull and dry road thriller that tests your perseverance.
TF Rating: 2/5
