The administration of Donald Trump has faced a significant judicial setback after the Supreme Court of the United States blocked a series of sweeping reciprocal tariffs imposed on multiple countries over the past year. The court observed that the tariffs were introduced under a law intended strictly for national emergencies, raising concerns over the scope of presidential authority in trade matters.
Trump Hits Back After Court Ruling
Responding sharply to the verdict, Trump criticized the judges and quickly moved to impose an additional 10% tariff using a separate legal provision. Despite the legal blow, he made it clear that his broader trade strategy would remain unchanged.
Addressing the media, Trump emphasized that the India–US trade arrangement would not be affected by the court’s order. “Nothing changes. They’ll be paying tariffs, and we will not be paying tariffs. So, the deal with India is they pay tariffs. This is a reversal from what it used to be,” he stated.
India–US Trade Deal To Continue As Is
Trump’s remarks indicate that India is unlikely to receive any immediate relief from the tariff structure despite the Supreme Court’s intervention. The existing bilateral understanding between the two nations will continue, with India bearing tariff obligations while the US remains exempt under the current framework.
He also praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “a great gentleman” and “a great man,” but added that India had previously taken advantage of the United States in trade terms. “He was much smarter than the people he was dealing with in the United States. India was ripping us off. So we made a deal with India — it’s a fair deal now. We are not paying tariffs to them, and they are paying tariffs,” Trump remarked.
Tariff Hikes And Partial Rollback
Last year, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports, which was later increased to a total of 50% as a punitive response to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. However, following recent negotiations between the two countries, the additional tariffs were reduced significantly to 18%.
The reduction came as a major relief for Indian exporters, who had been grappling with increased costs and trade uncertainty. While the Supreme Court ruling may have broader implications for US trade policy, Trump’s latest statements suggest that the India–US tariff arrangement will remain firmly in place for now.
