A new viral AI trend, Nano Banana, feels both exciting and unsettling. This feature, officially called Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, comes from Google Gemini AI and lets users turn selfies into glamorous, 3D-styled portraits. Its saree-themed edits have taken over Instagram and X, where thousands share cinematic, Bollywood-style images.
But recently, the trend took a disturbing turn. Instagram user Jhalak Bhawani shocked followers when she revealed that her AI-generated image showed a mole on her arm, a mole her uploaded selfie never displayed. Her question, “How did the AI know this detail?”, triggered an online storm.
Why The Nano Banana AI Trend Feels Unsettling
At first, people saw the saree edits as harmless fun. But Bhawani’s experience made users question how much AI “sees.” Soon, others began sharing similar cases, tattoos, scars, and even skin marks appearing in AI edits despite staying hidden in the original image.
This discovery sparked privacy concerns. Many users now worry that the tool accesses hidden data from Google Photos, profile pictures, or other sources. Although no one has confirmed such access, the fear itself makes many hesitant to try the trend.
Possible Explanations for the Creepy Results
Experts give three possible reasons:
Pattern Hallucination: AI often adds random skin textures or moles to make images look realistic.
Training Bias: Since the model has seen millions of portraits, it tends to add common details, which sometimes match real ones by coincidence.
Data Fears: Some users suspect AI cross-references personal data, though Google has not confirmed this.
Google’s Response and User Safety
Google claims it does not store uploaded photos. It also adds SynthID, an invisible watermark, to every AI-generated image. However, the company has not directly explained the mole and tattoo incidents, which keeps speculation alive.
How to Stay Safe While Using AI Edits
If you still want to try Nano Banana, act with caution. Upload only photos you feel comfortable sharing. Deny apps full access to your photo library. Remember that AI “guesses” or invents details, so don’t assume it pulls data from your private storage.
AI trends can entertain, but they also remind us how powerful this technology has become. Protect your privacy and stay alert while experimenting with such tools.
