Produced by Abhishek Nama and directed under the banner of Abhishek Pictures, the period drama is set for a worldwide release on December 29. The film, portraying the historical era of British rule in India, extensively captures the conditions of that time, reflected not only in the storyline but also in the culturally rich costumes of the characters.
Kalyan Ram takes on the role of a spy for the first time in his career, and to ensure a distinctive appearance, director-producer Abhishek Nama collaborated with costume designer Rajesh to create an entirely new look for the film.
Speaking about the costume design, Rajesh explained, “Upon hearing the script of ‘Devil’ from Abhishek Namagaru, I recognized the need for a distinct look for the heroine. In this narrative, the hero, an Indian, operates as a British spy. We aimed to design costumes that would enhance his character, showcasing the essence of Indianness. If you observe Kalyan Ram in ‘Devil,’ he is seen wearing a dhoti with a waistcoat, emphasizing the Indian influence in his attire.”
Highlights of the ‘Devil’ Costumes:
– Kalyan Ram had a wardrobe change with 90 costumes for the movie.
– 60 blazers were specially crafted using mohair wool imported from Italy.
– Kurta and dhoti were made from domestic cotton, paired with a waistcoat.
– Each costume (blazer, kurta, dhoti) required 11.5 meters of fabric.
– The hero’s style was complemented by 25 unique waistcoats.
– A custom-designed hanging watch, acquired from a heritage watch collector in Delhi, added a distinctive touch to the blazer pocket.
Costume designer Rajesh, with “Devil,” marks his 60th film and the 6th collaboration with Kalyan Ram, having previously worked on projects like MLA, 118, and Entha Manchivadavura. He is also involved in three upcoming films.
