Music Director Fires Over ‘Kanne Pettaro’ Usage

Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja has been firm and uncompromising when it comes to the use of his old songs in new films. Whenever his compositions are reused without proper consent, he does not hesitate to issue legal notices or approach the courts. He has also been involved in disputes with music companies, strongly asserting that the primary rights over a song belong to the original composer.

Echoing similar concerns, senior Tollywood music director Koti spoke with visible anger and anguish, questioning whether it is too much to expect at least permission or proper credit, even if no payment is involved.

Koti revealed that the popular song ‘Kanne Pettaro’, which he composed for the film Hello Brother, was recently used in the teaser of the film Dacoit: A Love Story, produced by Annapurna Studios. According to him, while the makers obtained permission from the music label and producers, they did not inform him or seek his consent even as a basic courtesy.

He expressed deep disappointment that neither permission was sought from him nor was he acknowledged as the original composer of the song. Koti questioned why music directors, who work tirelessly day and night to create memorable songs, receive no recognition or rights, while producers freely sell audio rights through agreements that leave composers with no control.

The senior composer further lamented that in some cases, even if music directors wish to remix their own songs, they are forced to pay ₹5–10 lakh to audio companies. He pointed out that many filmmakers reuse or remix songs by paying only the music labels, without ever approaching the original composers.

Clarifying his stand, Koti said he is not demanding money, but at least a basic courtesy of being informed or asked for permission. “If they ask, would we really say no?” he questioned. He added that producer Dil Raju had once shown gratitude and respect while using a song, but most others fail to value music directors.

Expressing his frustration, Koti lashed out emotionally, questioning whether he is being treated like a buffoon, and warned that he would no longer tolerate such disregard for composers’ rights.
