Russian President Vladimir Putin’s arrival in India brought back memories for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the two leaders once again shared a car ride in the national capital.
After Putin landed in Delhi, both leaders travelled together in the same official vehicle while leaving the airport. This instantly reminded people of their earlier carpool during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit held in September. At that event, Modi and Putin rode together from the summit venue to the Ritz-Carlton, where their bilateral meeting took place.
Their shared ride at the SCO Summit had drawn global attention, especially as it came at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump had imposed higher tariffs on India over New Delhi’s oil trade with Moscow.
“The car ride with PM Modi was my idea. It was a symbol of our friendship,” Putin said in an interview with India Today.
During the SCO Summit in China, Modi’s car had followed Putin’s Aurus Senat, in which they spent considerable time together. In Delhi today, Putin’s official car followed the Toyota Fortuner carrying both leaders.
Before landing in India, Putin’s aircraft became the most tracked flight in the world, according to FlightRadar24.
