At the pre-release event of ‘AAY’, the makers of the comedy entertainer were honest enough to say that the film derives its direct inspiration from ‘Jathi Ratnalu’. Narne Nithiin, Rajkumar Kasireddy and Ankith Koyya play three friends who are regarded as mental midgets in their Godavari village.
‘Jathi Ratnalu’ showed the three friends (played by Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna) as too naive and sweet towards each other. On the other hand, the characters in ‘AAY’ seem to come with a different set of traits. They are not naive but somewhat pragmatic. If the ‘Jathi Ratnalu’ duffers didn’t know how to answer even basic questions during a courtroom trial, in ‘AAY’, two of the friends lie about the caste identity of their friend in a situation. This bit from the film’s trailer goes to show that they are jobless but not as ignorant as the lead men of ‘Jathi Ratnalu’.
