‘Maa Kaali’, based on the Direct Action Day carnage in unpartitioned Bengal in 1946, is slated to arrive at the cinemas in August or September. The film will be released not only in Telugu but also in Hindi and Bengali.
Hours after its Teaser was released on July 4th, many social media influencers with a pro-BJP bias shared it widely, saying that ‘Maa Kaali’ is the first mainstream Indian film to be based on the horrors of Direct Action Day. The Teaser throws enough hints about its politics. It is likely to be promoted by the BJP leadership.
The film has parallels with how ‘The Kashmir Files’ divided social media in 2022. That film was co-produced by Abhishek Agarwal Arts, otherwise a Tollywood banner. Incidentally, ‘Maa Kaali’ has been produced by People Media Factory, otherwise a Tollywood banner. Vijay Yelakanti has wielded the megaphone.
The success of ‘Maa Kaali’ in Hindi is not a foregone conclusion, though. Recently, the Hindi audience rejected the allegedly pro-Hindutva movie ‘Veer Savarkar’ and the overtly pro-Hindutva movieĀ ‘Razakar’.
