The 2024 romantic black comedy Little Hearts has become a sensational talking point in Indian cinema. What makes it remarkable is not just its story but also the way the makers executed it. The team completed the film in only 32 days with a tight production budget of Rs 2.4 crore. Despite such limited resources, the movie collected an impressive Rs 15.41 crore worldwide and turned profitable within days of release.
Malayalam Little Hearts: A Unique Romantic Black Comedy
The makers released the Malayalam version of Little Hearts on 7 June 2024. Aby Treesa Paul and Anto Jose Pereira directed the film, while Rajesh Pinnadan wrote the script. Sandra Thomas Productions produced it, and the lead cast featured Shane Nigam and Mahima Nambiar.
The story follows Sibi and his father Baby, who take care of their family friend Johnson’s cardamom estate. While they live a simple life, love enters both Sibi’s and Baby’s worlds. Meanwhile, Sibi must share sensitive news about Johnson’s son’s sudden wedding with his parents. The film explores whether Sibi can handle these challenges without breaking anyone’s heart.
Luke Jose managed the cinematography, Noufal Abdullah edited the film, and Kailas Menon composed the music. Critics gave mixed reviews, but audiences embraced the story. According to Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 11.51 crore net in India during its first five days before seeing smaller collections later.
Telugu Little Hearts: A Fresh College Romance
Another version of Little Hearts released in Telugu, directed by Sai Marthand and produced by Aditya Haasan under the ETV Win banner. The makers crafted this rom-com with a low budget of around Rs 2 crore and recovered the full investment within 48 hours of release.
The Telugu version tells the story of Nalli Akhil Kumar (Mouli), who struggles academically while his father Nalli Gopal Rao (Rajiv Kanakala) pushes him to become an engineer. After securing a poor EAMCET rank, Akhil joins a long-term coaching center, where he meets Khatyayani (Shivani Nagaram). Their love story grows slowly, but an unexpected truth challenges Akhil’s feelings and their relationship. The film shows how they deal with love, family pressures, and personal hurdles.
A Double Success Story
Both versions of Little Hearts, Malayalam and Telugu, proved that filmmakers can create box office winners with small budgets, strong storytelling, and quick production schedules. At a time when big-budget blockbusters dominate theaters, Little Hearts delivers a refreshing reminder that simple, heartfelt stories can win both hearts and box office battles.
