Acclaimed filmmaker Sekhar Kammula has stirred fresh excitement by hinting at a potential sequel to his political drama Leader. During a recent media interaction, held ahead of his upcoming pan-India film Kubera, he spoke about his long-standing interest in Leader 2. However, he clearly stated that today’s changing political and social realities prevent him from moving forward with the project immediately.
Sekhar Kammula Rules Out Leader 2 as His Next Film
When journalists asked him about Leader 2, Kammula responded, “I had the idea for a sequel right from the beginning. But politics have changed, and more than that, people have changed. I need one strong line to build a story that truly fits today’s mindset.”
His statement quickly went viral. His remark, “people have changed more than politicians”, sparked strong reactions online. Many netizens praised his honesty and urged him to explore the theme from both a positive and negative perspective in the sequel.
Although Kammula confirmed that he already wrote a script for Leader 2, he made it clear that he won’t take it up as his next project. Instead, he revealed that he has started early-stage discussions for a new film with actor Nani, which will take priority for now.

Kammula also clarified that he doesn’t plan to create a sequel for Kubera, his upcoming release. The film, starring Dhanush, Nagarjuna, and Rashmika Mandanna, will hit theaters this Friday, June 20. The emotional and powerful promotional content has already generated massive buzz.
At the pre-release event, Kammula confidently stated that Kubera is a film “Goddess Saraswati would be proud to watch,” referring to its deep artistic and cultural impact.
