After the release issues surrounding Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2, yet another major film now faces an unexpected setback due to financial disputes. Karthi’s upcoming film Va Vaathiyar titled Annagaru Vostaru in Telugu has been stalled just a day before its planned release. Both the Tamil and Telugu versions were scheduled to hit theaters on December 12, but legal and financial complications have forced a postponement.
The trouble stems from unpaid dues owed by producer K.E. Gnanavel Raja to financier Arjunlal Sunderdas. A case filed in the Madras High Court alleges that Studio Green borrowed ₹10.35 crore from the financier in 2014. With accumulated interest, the outstanding amount has now ballooned to ₹21.78 crore. Citing non-payment, the court has ordered that the film must not be released until the dues are fully cleared.
During earlier hearings, the High Court granted Gnanavel Raja seven opportunities to repay or provide a definite repayment plan. However, despite repeated chances, the producer was unable to settle the amount. When the matter came up again today, the petitioner reiterated that no repayment had been made. Gnanavel Raja’s counsel informed the court that the producer was prepared to pay ₹3.75 crore within 24 hours and submit documents for movable properties as security for the remaining amount.
The court, noting repeated delays and insufficient compliance from the producer, ruled that Va Vaathiyar/Annagaru Vostaru cannot be released on any platform until the financial obligations are met. With no alternative left, the film’s release now stands postponed indefinitely.
An official announcement from the makers is expected soon.
