The filming of Kantara: Chapter 1 (commonly known as Kantara 2) has sparked a major controversy in Karnataka. The movie, directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Hombale Films, is being secretly shot in the forest area of Gavigudda, Heruru village. Local residents have accused the crew of causing serious environmental damage by operating in protected forest zones, despite having permissions only for village grazing lands.
Allegations of Environmental Damage
The locals claim that the Kantara 2 team is shooting in forest areas without proper authorization. Reports also suggest that explosives are being used during the filming, leading to significant disruption in the region. The Gavigudda forest is home to many wildlife species, and the alleged use of explosives has raised concerns about the safety of animals and birds.
Former Zilla Panchayat member Sanna Swamy voiced his concerns, saying, “Farmers in the area already suffer from wild elephant attacks. Officials are failing to enforce the Supreme Court’s directives to protect forests. Immediate steps must be taken to stop this damage.”
Conflict Between Crew and Locals
The controversy escalated when locals confronted the film crew about using explosives. During this altercation, a young man named Harish was allegedly attacked by the crew. Harish suffered injuries and was admitted to Crawford Hospital in Sakleshpur for treatment.
Sanna Swamy revealed that the locals strongly objected to the illegal activities and were met with hostility. He warned that the community would take legal action if the damage continued.
Demands and Police Involvement
Outraged locals are demanding that the film’s shooting be shifted to another location. A case has already been registered at the Yesalur Police Station. If their concerns are not addressed, locals plan to file a petition in the High Court.
Background of the Film
Kantara: Chapter 1 serves as a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, which became one of the highest-grossing Kannada films. Rishab Shetty, who also stars in the film, won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance. The prequel is scheduled for release on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
This controversy, however, casts a shadow over the highly anticipated film, as protests and legal challenges threaten to derail the production.
