Kannappa Movie Sparks Controversy in Guntur Over Brahmin Characters

By TeluguFunda / June 7, 2025

The upcoming big-budget film Kannappa, starring Manchu Vishnu, now faces fresh controversy just ahead of its pre-release event in Guntur. A local Brahmin group, Brahmana Chaitanya Vedika, has warned the filmmakers to publicly declare that the characters Pilaka and Gilaka do not appear in the movie. The group accused the Manchu family of targeting the Brahmin community once again and vowed to block the film’s release if the filmmakers ignore their demands.

Brahmana Group Targets ‘Pilaka’ and ‘Gilaka’ Characters

The Brahmana Chaitanya Vedika alleges that Brahmanandam and Saptagiri play the characters Pilaka and Gilaka, who mock the Brahmin community by appearing as comedic figures. The group filed a petition in the High Court, demanding the removal of these characters. They also claimed that the character names themselves insult and disrespect their religious identity.

The group’s president challenged the filmmakers by saying, “If Mohan Babu and his family truly have the courage, they should stand on stage at the Guntur event and announce that these characters are not in the movie.”

Vedika Recalls 2012 Denikaina Ready Incident

The Vedika also referred to the Denikaina Ready controversy from 2012. They alleged that Mohan Babu hired goons to attack Brahmin protestors and used his influence to file false cases against community members. They believe that the Manchu family has resumed this pattern with Kannappa, again mocking their faith and values.

Telugu Cinema’s History of Brahmin Portrayals

The Vedika acknowledged that many earlier Telugu films also included comedic Brahmin characters, like in Mayabazar and Annamayya. However, they argue that Kannappa goes beyond humor and mixes mockery with religious misrepresentation, which they find unacceptable.

They also criticized the filmmakers for modernizing Kannappa’s wife, who traditionally appears as a tribal woman. The group claimed that this change distorts history and adds to the false narrative. They labeled the film as “Nakili Kannappa” — a fake version of the legendary devotee’s story.

Censor Board Hasn’t Cleared the Film Yet

The Censor Board still hasn’t cleared Kannappa, as the production team continues to work on the final stages. With the Guntur event approaching quickly, pressure is mounting on the producers to clarify whether they included the controversial characters.

Star-Studded Cast Faces Pre-Release Trouble

Kannappa has already drawn widespread attention for its massive scale and stellar cast, including Prabhas, Mohanlal, Akshay Kumar, and Mohan Babu. Manchu Vishnu earlier revealed that Prabhas plays a key role, appearing for nearly 30 minutes in the movie.

Despite the film’s high-profile nature, the current controversy threatens to overshadow its release. Audiences and critics now watch closely to see whether Manchu Vishnu and his team will confront the backlash directly or try to sidestep the issue quietly.
