Interview: Koratala Siva talks about 'Devara'

“It has been a special journey with Jr NTR. He is not diplomatic when it comes to providing his feedback,” says Koratala Siva, the director behind the upcoming pan-Indian bonanza, ‘Devara’. The film arrives at the cinemas on September 27th.

“I am not undergoing any pressure. But yes, there is a certain nervousness,” the director, known for BO hits like ‘Srimanthudu’ and ‘Mirchi’, says.

Talking about the nature of the climax of ‘Devara’, he declines to comment elaborately. “Suffice it to say that the film ends with a cliffhanger,” Siva informs.

The film took a lot of time to go on the floors. “The scripting and elaborate pre-production are the reasons. We knew right from the start that ‘Devara’ would involve a lot of sea-based shots. An artificial sea-like arrangement had to be made. Lighting, camera angles and other aspects had to be planned, shot by shot. It took more than six months,” the filmmaker says.

Siva feels fortunate that he got to work with technicians like cinematographer Rathnavelu and production designer Sabu Cyril. “They shared more inputs than I did. They are legendary technicians,” the director says.

He almost laughs at the suggestion that the story of ‘Devara’ has parallels with films like ‘Andhrawala’. He suggests that dual roles are the only commonality between the two films. “Dual roles are as old as the hills,” Siva says.

‘Devara’ has Janhvi Kapoor as the heroine. “She was always circumspect on set. She would ask for the script a week or ten days ahead of her schedule. She would do extensive homework,” Siva says. Saif Ali Khan was not convinced that he would be able to pull off Bhaira. “At first, he wondered if he suited the film. After I gave him a sketch of his look, he was convinced,” Siva reveals.
