India’s Covid Cases Near 3,000, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi Worst Affected

By TeluguFunda / May 31, 2025

India faces a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases, with active infections now close to 3,000. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported a sharp rise in cases, from 1,010 on May 26 to 2,710 by May 30. This rapid increase has raised concerns, especially in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi, which recorded the highest case numbers.

Covid Cases Climb Rapidly in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi

Kerala leads the surge with 1,147 active cases. Maharashtra follows with 424, and Delhi has 294 infections. Gujarat also reported 223 cases, while both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka confirmed 148 each. West Bengal added 116 active cases to the total.

Several other states also reported new infections. Rajasthan recorded 51 cases, Uttar Pradesh 42, and Puducherry 35. Haryana logged 20, Andhra Pradesh 16, and Madhya Pradesh 10. Smaller numbers came from Goa (7), Odisha (5), Punjab (4), and Jammu and Kashmir (4). Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh each reported three cases, while Mizoram, Assam, and Uttarakhand each confirmed two. Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands currently have no active cases. Authorities have yet to release data from Bihar.

Recent Deaths Reported Amid Mild Symptoms

Health officials confirmed seven Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the total deaths in 2025 to 22. These include two fatalities in Maharashtra and one each in Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu. Most of the deceased were elderly and had pre-existing health conditions. Officials said that the current symptoms remain mild and manageable.

New Variants Detected But Pose No Major Threat

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) identified Omicron sub-variants as the main cause of the current wave. JN.1 appears in 53% of samples, BA.2 in 26%, and other Omicron types make up 20%. Experts also detected newer sub-variants like NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFG in a few cases.

Researchers continue to track these new strains. However, they do not consider them dangerous at this point. The World Health Organization (WHO) listed LF.7 and NB.1.8.1 as Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs). These are not classified as Variants of Concern. Experts say the symptoms mostly resemble the common flu—fever, sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue, and exhaustion.

Stay Alert, Not Alarmed: Experts Advise Basic Precautions

ICMR Director General Dr. Rajiv Behl urged the public to stay alert but avoid panic. He advised elderly individuals and those with low immunity to take extra precautions and reduce the risk of exposure.

Health departments across several states instructed hospitals to stay ready with oxygen supply, testing kits, medicines, and vaccines. Authorities also advised people with co-morbidities to wear masks in public places and maintain basic hygiene.

India’s Covid situation remains under control. However, continued vigilance, early detection, and basic preventive steps will play a vital role in managing the spread.
