In a disappointing development, the Indian film Homebound has exited the Oscars 2026 race. The film, which was India’s official entry for the Academy Awards, had earlier made the shortlist of 15 films in the Best International Feature Film category but failed to secure a place among the final nominees.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now announced the official nominations. The five films selected in the Best International Feature Film category are The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), Sentimental Value (Norway), Sirat (Spain), and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia).
Despite missing out on the final list, Homebound has had an impressive journey on the global stage and is widely regarded as one of the finest Indian films in recent years. Backed by Karan Johar and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the film features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles.
Homebound delves into themes of caste and religious discrimination in India, narrating the story of two friends as they navigate societal barriers while striving to build their futures. The film is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
