Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja continues to enforce his strict stance against the unauthorized use of his music in films. Known for adopting a zero-tolerance approach, the Maestro has repeatedly taken legal action to safeguard the integrity of his work.
After securing a major victory earlier this year against the makers of Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly, Ilaiyaraaja has now won another legal battle. The Madras High Court has ordered the removal of his songs from the recent Diwali release Dude, starring Pradeep Ranganathan.
In his petition, Ilaiyaraaja stated that two of his classic compositions ‘Karutha Machan’ from Pudhu Nell, Pudhu Naathu and ‘Nooru Varusham Indha Maappillaum’ from Panakkaran were used in Dude without his consent. The Court found prima facie evidence that these songs had been modified and incorporated into the film without permission, thereby violating the sanctity of the original works and harming the composer’s reputation.
As a result, the Court issued an interim injunction banning the use of the songs in the film. Although the production house, Mythri Movie Makers, requested a week’s extension to implement the order, the Judge dismissed the plea.
The respondents argued that Sony Music had obtained rights to the songs from Echo and had legally granted permission for their use. However, Ilaiyaraaja’s counsel asserted that the original composer retains moral and copyright authority over his creations and that his approval is mandatory, regardless of music label agreements.
With consecutive legal victories, Ilaiyaraaja has now established a strong precedent in copyright law. The ruling makes it clear that filmmakers cannot rely solely on music label permissions to reuse iconic songs. Going forward, producers and directors must seek direct approval from composers to avoid legal disputes that could disrupt releases and impact revenue.
Ilaiyaraaja’s firm stand serves as an important reminder for the film industry: respecting creative ownership is not only a legal obligation but also a tribute to the artists who shape Indian cinema’s musical legacy.
