After playing some outstanding cricket throughout the tournament, Young India suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Under-19 Asia Cup final. What made the loss even more painful was that it came against arch-rivals Pakistan and that too without much of a fight. Losing to any team can be accepted, but a one-sided defeat to Pakistan in a final left Indian fans deeply disappointed.
The final, held in Dubai on Sunday, turned out to be a forgettable outing for the Indian colts. Winning the toss and opting to bowl first proved to be a costly decision. Pakistan, batting first, piled up a massive 348 runs. Indian pacers, especially Kishan Singh (50 runs in 5 overs) and Deepesh Devendran (83 runs in 10 overs), leaked runs heavily and failed to contain the opposition.
Pakistan opener Sameer Minhas played a sensational knock, scoring a breathtaking 172 off 113 balls, including 17 fours and 9 sixes. He looked every bit like a seasoned senior batsman. He was well supported by Ahmed Hussain, who scored 56 off 72 balls. Despite Minhas’ aggressive onslaught, Indian bowlers were unable to apply the brakes, allowing Pakistan to post a daunting total.
Chasing a mammoth target, the Indian batting line-up crumbled under pressure. Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi provided a spark of hope by smashing 18 runs in the very first over. However, captain Ayush Mhatre once again disappointed, scoring just 2 runs off 7 balls. Apart from one good performance, Ayush failed to make a significant impact in the tournament and perished playing a poor shot.
Vaibhav, too, couldn’t capitalize on a life he was given and was dismissed by a brilliant delivery from pacer Ali Raza, edging it to the wicketkeeper. Before that, one-down batter Aron Georgi looked in good touch, scoring 16 with four boundaries, but threw his wicket away with a loose shot. The rest of the batting order followed suit, as India were bowled out for just 156 runs in 26.2 overs, losing the final by a massive margin of 191 runs. Deepesh Devendran, batting at number ten, was the top scorer with 36 runs.
Why Bowl First After Winning the Toss?
Young India had entered the final unbeaten, defeating teams like UAE, Pakistan (in the league stage), Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. However, their decision to bowl first on a batting-friendly pitch surprised many. Facing a huge target while chasing, the young batters succumbed to pressure.
The senior Indian team had earlier defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup final held in September, raising hopes that the junior team would repeat the same magic. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be. The failure with the ball in the first innings and the batting collapse that followed proved decisive.
Still, this defeat should not overshadow the impressive journey of the young Indian team in the tournament. There’s nothing lost in the bigger picture only valuable lessons learned. Better luck next time!
